Caribbean Independence: Grenada’s 50th and St. Lucia’s 45th

Writer: Cara TurnbullCara Turnbull

During the month of February, two Caribbean nations celebrated their independence from Britain. Grenada celebrated their 50th independence on 7th February and St. Lucia celebrated their 45th independence on 22nd February.

Grenada’s theme for their Golden Jubilee .…One People, One Journey, One Future. I find this theme so fitting for a country, who over the last 50 years, has grown stronger and endured through trials, always triumphant in the end. Take a look and listen to the theme song, Grenada 50 -Up From Here     https://youtu.be/QDQVuHLrH5o

In celebration of the 50th year of independence, Grenadian photographer, Dane Isaac directed the documentary 50 for 50: Grenadian Echoes. This phenomenal project takes you on a journey throughout the island nation meeting 50 Grenadians: 20 men, 20 women & 10 young people. We meet these Grenadians, hear their stories, and get inside the history. It is a visual representation of the theme, One People, One Journey, One Future. Definitely worth checking out!

St. Lucia’s theme for their 45th independence is Douvan Ansanm: Building a Nation Through Unity, Resilience and Creativity. Douvan Ansanm is St. Lucian creole for Forward Together. Back in 2020, I was fortunate enough to be in St. Lucia for their 41st independence. Based on that experience I can say Douvan Ansanm is the most fitting phrase for Lucians.

St. Lucian Kwéyòl is just one of the ways that the country moves together. The connection people share in a common language is one that can't be severed, But St. Lucia is an English speaking island, so kwéyòl is typically learned in the home and in the community.

This is where Twossaints enters the chat! St. Lucian sisters, Kimhia & Indira are the proprietors of Twossaints, online St. Lucian kwéyòl course. The course immerses the learner in the culture through a range of media, making learning accessible to the masses. Their IG, @twossaint  is also a great resource for learning kwéyòl words and phrases. Start learning today!
